Tomato Saaru has come to my rescue innumerable times in last couple of months. I was first introduced to this delicious entree soon after my wedding. After the hectic, heavy Wedding food, Anna and Tomato Saaru proved a total bliss for us. All thanks to my MIL for this intro..Tomato Saaru is a quick dish on days when I am terribly exhausted after a whole day’s work, or when we want to eat light and healthy 😉 and definitely this is something which even husbands can prepare when wives are out sick 😀
Ingredients:
- Preparation Time: 0 min
- Cooking Time: 20 min
- Recipe Level: Easy
- Serve with hot rice; serves 4
- Source: Atte i.e. MIL
- Cuisine: South Indian
- 1 cup toor daal
- 1 large tomato
- 1 tbsp tamarind (concentrated or raw)
- 2 tbsp Saar pudi or MTR Rasam pudi
- 2-4 curry leaves
- 1 tsp sugar
- Salt to taste
- Place daal and tomato in a cooker and boil uptil 3 whistles (Add 2 more whistles when daal is not kept under water initially)
- After the cooker cools down, add pudi, and tamarind. If you are using Raw Tamarind, soak it under water and then use that paste.
- Then add a cup of water and churn to obtain thinner consistency. Add sugar. Churn some more and add curry leaves and salt
- Make sure gas burner is on sim while you add the above
- Saaru is ready to serve with hot rice..i.e. Anna Saaru ready aaithu
Mad Notes:
- Tip: Place daal under water for atleast 15 min if you have time luxury
- I use rice cooker cup for reference; 1 cup = 180ml
- tbsp = tablespoon; tsp= teaspoon
